Tips for Storing Your RV for Fall

As another summer ends, you may need to put your camper, motorhome or travel trailer into storage for the coming fall and winter months. However, even if you’ve diligently maintained your recreational vehicle (RV) and taken steps to ensure safe storage, there are various precautions and steps you should take to help avoid any unpleasant surprises come spring.

Whether you plan to store your RV at your own residence or an off-site garage, there are things you may need to do to protect it and your financial interests even as it remains idle. Consider the following steps:

  1. Remove all food. Even nonperishable items and canned goods should not be left in an RV for an extended period, as this could attract rats and other pests to take up residence in your vehicle for the winter.
  2. Implement pest protection, Speaking of unwelcome intruders, even if you clear out your RV, it may still be a warm or attractive home for pests. Consider sprinkling borax around the perimeter to deter insects and ensure all access doors and vents are closed completely.
  3. Limit moisture. Clean up any moisture in your RV and consider running a dehumidifier before storing it. You may also choose to hang gel packs that can pull moisture out of the air. These steps may be critical for preventing mold problems from occurring and spreading throughout the wet months of winter.
  4. Consider storage circumstances. Be mindful of the unique conditions in which you choose to store your RV. For example, if you’re storing it in an uncovered area, you may want to cover your tires to prevent wear and tear caused by UV exposure.
  5. Adjust insurance. It may be possible for you to save money on your RV insurance if you’re laying up your vehicle for an extended period. Consider your exact situation when making adjustments. While it may be tempting to scale back your policy to include only comprehensive coverage, collision coverage could still be necessary if you’re parking in a group setting where someone else could crash into your stationary vehicle.
